Welcome to The Ellery!
Daily reminder that mental illness is super common AND that depression is a liar.
The stories on Twitter, the statistics, the op-eds don't even begin to cover the amount of pain that victims are expected to shoulder. For every victim, for every survivor, that finds power in disclosing their trauma, there are many who don't. And we shouldn't ask them to. The responsibility shouldn't fall on us. We're still trying to heal. #MeToo
I'm baaaack and just in time for some very important dates. October is Depression Awareness month and the 5th of October (today) is Depression Screening Day. If you suspect that you or a loved one is suffering from depression, you can take an online screening survey here. It's quick, easy, confidential and best of all, it's free!
Weird right? That I have to defend taking medication? People won’t judge you for taking an Advil for your hangover or a Z-pack for your strep throat. Hell, most people won’t judge you if you decide to roll at *insert music festival of choice*. (This is a judgement free zone but please, Roll Responsibly) So why is it that when people with mental illnesses disclose that they're on meds, they’re faced with a barrage of misinformed bullshit?
Congrats! You’ve made it to your destination without selling your soul to the devil in exchange for the silence of the teething toddler next to you. Honestly, truly, you deserve a medal. You’ve arrived and it is finally time to get your Dora the Explorer on. 37 things to see, 54 places to go, and 105 dishes to taste, all in the next 4.5 days. I may not know much about algebra but I do know that it adds up to quite a time crunch.
